What is Typing Speed Test?

A typing speed test measures WPM (words per minute, where a word is standardized as 5 keystrokes including spaces), accuracy percentage (correct keystrokes divided by total keystrokes times 100), and raw WPM versus net WPM (net WPM deducts errors). Speed benchmarks: hunt-and-peck typists average 20–30 WPM, average office workers reach 40 WPM, proficient typists hit 60–80 WPM, professional transcriptionists exceed 80–100 WPM, competitive typists reach 120–150+ WPM, and the current world record exceeds 220 WPM.

How to use

  1. Click Start or begin typing the displayed text to start the timer.
  2. Type the passage as accurately and quickly as possible.
  3. Read your WPM and accuracy when the time runs out.
  4. Review which keys caused slowdowns and focus practice there.

Why it matters

Typing speed directly correlates with productivity for knowledge workers. At 40 WPM versus 80 WPM, a person typing the equivalent of 500 hours of documentation per year saves 250 hours — more than six weeks of work time. Touch typing using all 10 fingers on the home row doubles average speed compared to hunt-and-peck for most people within two to three months of deliberate practice.

Pro tip

The biggest improvement comes from prioritizing accuracy over speed. Slow down until your accuracy is above 95%, then gradually increase pace. Speed follows accuracy naturally — trying to type fast while making many errors actually lowers net WPM and builds bad muscle memory. Use one-minute tests daily rather than one long session for the best results.

Frequently Asked Questions

WPM (Words Per Minute) is calculated as the number of correctly typed words divided by the elapsed time in minutes. A 'word' is standardized as 5 characters.
Average typing speed is 40–60 WPM. Professional typists typically reach 70–90 WPM. Touch typists who don't look at the keyboard often exceed 80 WPM.
Practice regularly using all fingers, learn to touch type without looking at the keyboard, and focus on accuracy before speed. Accuracy above 95% is more important than raw speed.
Accuracy is the percentage of correctly typed characters. An accuracy of 98% means 2 out of every 100 characters had an error.
