Miles (mi) and Feet (ft) explained
Both units belong to the imperial and US customary system, so this conversion is exact and involves no metric factor at all. The foot is 12 inches, or exactly 0.3048 meters since 1959. The mile is 1,760 yards, and since a yard is three feet, that is 5,280 feet. The strange figure comes from an English compromise in 1593: the Roman mile of 5,000 feet was reconciled with the farming furlong — the length of a ploughed furrow — by rounding the mile up to eight furlongs rather than redefining the furlong. Aircraft altitudes are given in feet while distances are often in statute or nautical miles. A cruising altitude of 35,000 feet is 6.63 statute miles straight up, which puts the scale of a climb in perspective.
Surveying and property frontage
US land descriptions still use chains, furlongs and miles. A parcel with a quarter-mile frontage has 1,320 feet of road edge, the number you need for fencing quantities or utility run costs.
